Unveil the enigmatic beauty of West-Mexico with this serene Pre-Columbian Jalisco pottery female figure, crafted between 300 BCE and 300 CE. This hand-built representation captivates with its pronounced feminine form, distinctive facial features, and the timeless allure of ancient craftsmanship.

This intriguing Pre-Columbian Jalisco pottery figure represents a seated female form from West Mexico, crafted between 300 BCE and 300 CE. The hand-built figure measures 178mm in length, 127mm wide, and 89mm in depth, embodying the region's ancient sculptural traditions.

The figure's conical legs and outstretched arms complement her voluptuous form, a typical representation of femininity in Jalisco art. Her facial features are marked by puffy, circular eyes and a pronounced nose, a stylistic choice that captures the essence of the era's aesthetic preferences.

Despite repair to one leg, including resurfacing and overpainting along the break lines, the figure maintains its integrity. Minor abrasions and the softening of finer details have occurred, yet it retains a compelling presence with light earthen deposits enhancing its authentic patina.

Previously auctioned at Bonhams in San Francisco, California, in September 2007, this artifact's excellent form and condition make it a remarkable example of Jalisco artistry. It stands as a testament to the rich cultural narrative of West Mexico and is a valuable acquisition for enthusiasts of Mesoamerican history.

The Jalisco female figure's pottery construction and seated posture reflect the artistic conventions of West Mexican figures from the Pre-Columbian period. Her pronounced physical attributes, such as the voluptuous breasts and detailed facial features, highlight fertility and beauty ideals of the time. The restoration work indicates the value placed on preserving such cultural artifacts. The figure's overall form and condition provide significant insight into the ceremonial and societal roles these effigies played in ancient Jalisco culture.
